Meet John

Hi — I’m John, founder and teacher at A-1 International English School.

Originally from Alaska, USA, I now call Asahikawa, Japan, home. I’ve spent many years helping international students and professionals speak English more naturally and confidently, and I’m proud to be part of the local community here in Asahikawa.

My lessons are relaxed, practical, and focused on real conversation — not grammar drills or memorized scripts. I help students think in English, build confidence, and express themselves clearly in everyday situations.

Before moving to Japan, I lived for many years in Alaska, where I enjoyed hiking, fishing, and exploring its wilderness. I often share stories from those adventures in class — they make great conversation topics.

🗺️ Fun fact: I’ve driven the legendary Alcan Highway between Alaska and the continental U.S. eighteen times — through Canada’s Yukon territory, British Columbia, and Alberta. There are plenty of stories to tell!
